CBBCtalk Mail List

CBBCtalk is a great place not only to discuss biking activities and events and share information, but also an invaluable way to get out last minute information about changes in plans to CBBC events and activities.

The CBBCtalk discussion mail list is a communication tool for existing CBBC members. Any bicycling related information that could benefit a member should generally be considered acceptable for posting. However, CBBC does not allow commercial endeavors to solicit or advertise on the mail list. Bike Shops that have events or sales that are beneficial to CBBC members may post to the list following the guidelines below.

To access the mail list web interface to edit your settings or to join the CBBCtalk mail list, please follow this link: CBBCtalk

The following list of usage guidelines was prepared by the CBBC's Executive Committee, and may be posted on CBBCtalk periodically as a reminder. Contact the List Manager if you have questions or suggestions or if you are uncertain about a post you wish to make.

*** IMPORTANT IMPORTANT IMPORTANT IMPORTANT IMPORTANT ***

GUIDELINES

1. This is a discussion mail list. To facilitate a discussion, replies to another user's e-mail posting will automatically send your reply to all the other members of CBBCtalk. If you're uncertain whether a couple hundred people need your reply, please reply to the sender only, NOT to the list. To make a personal, one-to-one reply to the original e-mailer, you must copy and paste the originator's e-mail in the "To:" field and remove the "CBBCtalk@cbbikeclub.org" address in order to not send unintended or inappropriate mail to the List.

2. List posts should stick to general biking-related stuff, club-related activities, and/or cycling news. Write a plain, clear subject line for your list serve post so that it is clear if it's not of general interest (e.g., FOR SALE: Trek 5500). Please don't just post links, briefly tell us what they're about.

Although info or discussion about any club activity is fine, not everyone is interested in the non-biking stuff, so make it easy for those people to skip a message they're not interested in. And please keep any non-biking messages limited to club-related activities.

The List is available to subscribers to solicit others to join them in an activity. However, if an activity is posted on the List and is not part of CBBC's official calendar of rides or events, it is NOT an official CBBC activity and the club takes no responsibility for it.

3. CBBC generally does not allow commercial endeavors to solicit or advertise on the mail list. If deemed beneficial to CBBC members, simple links to commercial endeavors may be posted as links within the e-mail, but please don't just e-mail links without giving some idea what they are about or how they are useful (e.g., a touring outfit you had a good experience with). See below for commercial posting guidelines.

4. Messages should be short, text only, and to the point. Do not attach any files to your e-mail posts. If you have a file such as a picture to share, please post it on the Internet somewhere and just send a link to the List with a description. Alternatively, you can request that people contact you directly for the file. If you think it's appropriate for our web site, please contact the Web Coordinator about getting your content or file on our CBBC web site.

5. Foul language, derogatory comments, and self-proclaimed list disciplinarian posts will not be tolerated. The List Manager will monitor the postings and take the appropriate action. If you have a complaint about a post, please send a one-to-one message to the List Manager.

6. Do not FLAME (argue with people) on the List. Contact the person privately or ask the List Manager to deal with the situation. If someone does something inappropriate, our aim is to educate, not publicly humiliate them. Please be tolerant and respectful of others.

7. Do NOT send chain letters, virus warnings, good Samaritan notices, e-mail surveys, etc. (that includes fund-raising solicitations, even if you're cycling to raise money).

8. DO pause before you send an e-mail. Does it say what you mean? Could it give offense to someone? Does it follow the rules? Change it BEFORE you send it!

COMMERCIAL POSTINGS

Many commercial bicycling organizations support CBBC and are listed on our web site at: Bike Shops.

If one of these organizations has an event or sale, or maybe they just want to send out an alert that a sought after product is now available, they can do so by following the following guidelines:
1. They must be listed on the Bike Shops page
2. They must submit the desired posting to the List Manager for approval and posting
3. They can post an e-mail with a link that points to the organization's web site that has the announcement and/or news.
4. In order to not overrun our List with commercial advertisements, organizations should limit their posts to once every three months.
