I'll weigh in here since I was involved in defining ad hoc rides a number of years ago -- an ad hoc ride was defined as any ride that was posted at the "last minute" to CBBCTalk (now replaced by the CBBC Forum). As such, it is NOT run by CBBC and is merely an offer by a member for others to join him/her on a ride.

A ride listed on the CBBC web site, whether in the newsletter or not, was considered a club ride. The distinction has always been intended to differentiate for legal and insurance purposes what is a club-sanctioned ride and what is just a few people meeting on an impromptu basis to ride. All club rides require a waiver while ad hoc rides do not as they are not "sanctioned" by CBBC.

Ad hoc rides use CBBC's List Serve or Forum to connect with others; similarly, someone might post a hike, or a happy hour, or going to a bike race, etc., but these would not be considered club-sanctioned activities or events.

A review of this definition with our insurance carrier is probably worthwhile.

Sal, this is one reason that I don't like this new Forum. With googlegroups, I could respond directly to your email so that no one else saw my comment. Now, not to discredit the commentary of everyone else, I must say that yours is the most on point. Thanks for taking the time to spell it all out. Walt

The Official CBBC Definition of an Ad Hoc Ride! We will post this somewhere on the Website and modify as needed.

CBBC promotes the fun and safety of riding in groups! The ride calendar is established to be able to offer a variety of rides at all levels and allow members to plan their rides in advances. As we know our lives are not always predictable! Members are encouraged to post “Ad hoc” rides on the Forum and allow other members to join them.

Here is the “official” definition of a CBBC Ad Hoc Ride:

-The ride may be posted on the CBBC Forum no earlier than 48 hours of the ride date and time. Try to give members at least 24 hours notice.
-The ride is not considered a CBBC sponsored club ride.
-No approval needed by the Ride Coordinators.
-A cue sheet or sign in sheet is not needed.
-Ad hoc rides are not covered by the Club insurance policy.
-Ride start location and time is up to the ad hoc ride leader. Try not to compete with a regular club ride – those ride leaders are a precious few!
-The ride will not be credited toward the ride leader program.
-Please ride safely and courteously (especially if you’re wearing your club jersey!)
