If you download a route to your GPS can you start at a location other than one specified on the course.

That is dependent on the device and the software. I had a garmin 700 long ago and it would not pick up a route in progress. I now have a newer garmin and it will pick up a route in progress.

I have tried that with my Garmin Edge 130 and it did pick up the route from that point and guided me on from there.

According to me, GPS s very useful without the use of cables or magnets, GPS cycling computers correctly calculate speed, distance, and time-based on satellite tracking of your location. You may submit the route-recorded information, together with heart rate, cadence, and power statistics, to a ride-logging site to assess your performance for entertainment or training purposes.
