Level B-: 14mph, 59 miles. Meet at Parking lot of the Newark & Pomeroy Rail Trail, near Trek Bikes & Ski Bum stores, next to the Newark Shopping Center on Main St. . The ride leaves at 9:00 am. In honor of Thanksgiving turkey, this ride is a revival of the late Peter Odell's classic route to the Turkey Point Lighthouse, on the scenic and peaceful peninsula between the Elk River and the North East River, at the head of the Chesapeake Bay. Mostly quiet roads in northwestern Delaware and northeastern Maryland. Rest stop at mile 18.5, in the cute town of Northeast, MD. ScenicTurkey Point Lighthouse at the tip of the peninsula is at mile 31.5. (The Lighthouse Trail runs right along the perimeter of the peninsula.) On the return, we have a rest stop at a market/deli at mile 45. Total elevation gain is 3986 feet. Mostly rolling terrain, with some steep climbs (up-down-up-down) close to the lighthouse at the tip of the peninsula. We will stop to regroup as needed. Travel time from Philadelphia to Newark is ~one hour. Driving Directions from Philadelphia: I-95 South into DE, then DE-273 West toward Newark/Univ. of DE. DE-273 will lead you to Main St. The Newark Shopping Center, the Rail Trail parking lot, and Bike Line & Ski Bum stores will be on your right. COVID PRECAUTIONS in Effect: Please read the Rider Guidelines for COVID Mitigation posted on the website. Please bring masks and hand sanitizer, and please practice social distancing - 20 ft apart when cycling, and at least 6 ft apart when stopped. Cue sheets will be available.
